Abstract

Present communication reports the occurrence of Pycnodonte (Phygraea) navaniaensis sp, nov. from the Navania Limestone of the Wadhwan Formation. Presence of the genus Pycnodonte along with Hemiaster is indicative of euhaline waters and low energy conditions at the time of deposition of the Navania Limestone.

Abstract

Late Cretaceous planktonic forarmruferal species viz, Guembeluna cretacea Cushman, Pseudoquembehna excolata (Cushman), Ventilabrella sp, Globigerinelloides sp , Hedbergella delrioensis (Carsey), H planispira (Tappan), Globotruncana concavata (Brotzen), G marginata (Reuss), G of rosetta and Rugoglobigerina macrocephala Bronnimann are reported from cherty limestone of Baratang Island, Andaman. The assemblage indicates dominance of Maestrichtian element Based on recorded stratigraphic ranges of different species the cherty limestone is assigned a Campanian-Maestrichtian age.

Abstract

Occurrence of fossiliferous clay beds underlying the laterite cap and containing palynofossils has been recorded from Goa State. The first occurrence is from the north bank of Mandovi river at the bridge on Mapusa-Panaji road where bluish grey clay yielded spores. The second occurrence is from the Iron Ore Mine of M/S Lithoferro Pvt. Ltd. at Village Sangod, South Goa. It exposes carbonaceous clay containing carbonized plant debris. Palynoassemblage, comprising elements such as Ceiba sp., Cocos nucifera, palm sp., Lycopodium inundata, Lygodium fiexuosum, Ceratopteris thalictroides, Ceratopteris sp. etc., along with microforaminiferal organic linings indicates estuarine environment of deposition and the climate to be tropical and humid with high rainfall. Further, presence of marcasite in these clays associated with strong sulphurous odour also points out their deposition under reducing condition. On the basis of the mode of occurrence and palynoassemblage, these clays correspond to the Ratnagiri Beds exposed in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg Districts of Maharashtra State, suggesting that the clay beds of Goa are the southward extension of Ratnagiri Beds. Neotectonic activity is reflected by the uplift of estuarine sediments above the prcsent sea level as well as the deeply entrenched and highly meandering river courses in the study area.

Abstract

Two species of fossil Catenicellid Bryozoa are described from Holocene sediments of the west coast of Maharashtra. Catenicella nagaonensis is reported as new species and the other Catenicella conteii (Audouin) has a cosmopolitan distribution. Catenicellid bryozoans withstand high current action and they are reported elsewhere from current-dominated settings. Along the West coast in certain localities such as Akshi, Nagaon, Chikhla, Sion and Revdanda these species occur in moderate percentage. Their occurrence suggests prevalence of fairly high current speed in the past. C. conteii is a typical tropical to warm water species occurring in the depth range of 18-25 m, indicating a shallow water origin for the shell limestones and black plastic muds.

Abstract

The calcareous coarse-grained sandstones occurring both in the Baratang Group (Lower Paleocene to Lower Eocene) and the Port Blair Group (Middle Eocene to Oligocene) yielded a rich dasycladacean algal flora comprising four species namely: Broeckella baratangensis sp. nov., Dissocladella deserta Elliott, Neomeris plagnensis Dellofre and Trinocladus indicus sp. nov. They have Tethyan affinities and indicate shallow marine tropical water having a maximum depth of about 5-6 m below low tide level.
